Over 100 Families Face Social Ostracization Following Village Dispute in Kurigram

More than 100 families in the Roumari upazila of Kurigram district are facing severe social isolation after local leaders reportedly banned merchants from selling them essential goods. The ostracization, enforced through public announcements, threatens shopkeepers with a 5,000 taka fine for engaging in commerce with the targeted households.
The conflict stems from a long-standing dispute over a local graveyard between residents of Hazirhat and Balurchor villages. The disagreement, which escalated into a violent confrontation approximately two years ago, recently culminated in a local arbitration meeting. During this gathering, community leaders decided to socially boycott the families deemed responsible for the earlier unrest.

Victims describe a climate of fear and restricted movement. Akhtar Hossain, one of the affected residents, stated that his family is effectively under siege, noting that they are frequently intimidated by individuals brandishing sticks whenever they attempt to leave their homes.
Local merchants have confirmed their compliance with the boycott, citing pressure from the Hazirhat market leaseholder and the local traders’ association. One shopkeeper, speaking on condition of anonymity, admitted that they are adhering to the directive out of fear of financial penalties and social repercussions.

When reached for comment, Abu Sayed, president of the local traders’ association, acknowledged that the decision to halt trade with the families was reached during a village arbitration attended by roughly 2,000 people. He stopped short of claiming direct responsibility for the order, characterizing it as a collective community decision.
On July 11, victims filed a formal complaint with the Roumari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and the local police station. While the police initially denied receiving a formal complaint, Officer-in-Charge Kawsar Ali confirmed that he is currently engaged in discussions with market leaders to de-escalate the situation.
Roumari UNO Alauddin has pledged to intervene, promising to summon the members of the traders’ association and conduct a site visit to address the humanitarian concerns and restore order in the area.
