Appellate Division Stays Bail for Former Lawmaker Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque in Murder Cases

The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division chamber court on Thursday stayed the bail granted to former Member of Parliament Syed Sayedul Haque, popularly known as Barrister Suman, in two separate murder cases filed at the Adabar and Jatrabari police stations. Justice Md. Rezaul Haque issued the order following petitions filed by the state seeking to suspend the High Court’s previous bail rulings.

The High Court had initially granted interim bail to Suman in the Adabar murder case on June 8 and subsequently in the Jatrabari case on June 9, both linked to fatalities during the anti-discrimination student movement. During Thursday’s proceedings, Additional Attorney General Aneek R. Haque represented the state, while lawyers Litan Ahmed and Md. Khurram Shah Murad appeared on behalf of the former lawmaker.

Barrister Suman’s legal status remains complex as he faces a total of seven criminal cases following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina administration on August 5, 2024. He was taken into custody on October 22. While his bail in the Adabar and Jatrabari cases has been halted, the Supreme Court had previously upheld his bail in a separate attempted murder case filed at the Mirpur police station on May 11.

According to his legal counsel, Litan Ahmed, the remaining six cases against Suman are currently pending, with bail hearings for those matters still to be addressed by the courts. Suman, who served as an independent MP representing the Habiganj-4 constituency, remains a central figure in the ongoing legal scrutiny following the widespread political upheaval of the past year.
