BGB Rejects Misinformation Regarding Border Talks with Indian Officials

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has issued a sharp rebuke against circulating reports on social media and certain news outlets that characterized its recent director-general-level talks with India’s Border Security Force (BSF) as compromised. In an official statement released Monday, the BGB categorically denied claims that it had shown leniency regarding border killings and illegal push-ins, labeling such assertions as malicious and rooted in a misunderstanding of established diplomatic norms.

The border force specifically addressed claims surrounding the BGB director general’s meeting with Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, dismissing allegations that the engagement was a clandestine or unscheduled affair. The BGB clarified that it is standard protocol during such border conferences for the visiting delegation head to pay a courtesy call to the host country’s home minister or equivalent official. This practice is consistent with previous engagements, including the most recent conference held in Dhaka, where the BSF director general similarly met with the Bangladeshi home advisor. The BGB emphasized that the meeting in India was pre-approved and served as a platform for Dhaka to firmly articulate its concerns regarding border violence and unauthorized migration.

During the 57th BGB-BSF conference, the two sides navigated an extensive agenda, with Bangladesh tabling 31 specific issues compared to India’s 21. According to the BGB, the primary focus remained on achieving zero-casualty border management and halting push-in attempts. These priorities, along with concerns over narcotics trafficking and the activities of armed groups in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, were formally documented in the Joint Record of Discussions (JRD) signed by the heads of both border forces.

The BGB expressed deep concern that the spread of misinformation is an orchestrated attempt to undermine the force’s leadership. Since August 5, the BGB has undertaken significant efforts to stabilize border regions, curb human trafficking, and neutralize armed insurgent activities, thereby restoring public confidence in the agency. The force stated that the recent campaign of personal attacks against its top leadership is a deliberate attempt to demoralize personnel and weaken the institution’s operational integrity.
