Video Evidence Implicates Student Leaders in Brutal Assaults Inside Rajshahi University Library

Video footage has surfaced revealing the active involvement of student leaders, including Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RAKSU) General Secretary Salauddin Ammar and members of Islami Chhatra Shibir, in the violent assault of three students inside the Rajshahi University central library. The incident, which occurred in the presence of university proctorial staff, faculty, and police, is being described by observers as an unprecedented breakdown of campus security and academic sanctity.
The confrontation originated from a dispute involving a female student on Monday. When the three targeted students fled to the library’s reading room for sanctuary, they were followed by RAKSU and Shibir activists who proceeded to beat them. The violence escalated further when one of the injured students was forcibly pulled from an ambulance while being transported to the hospital and subjected to additional physical abuse.

Widely circulated footage shows Ammar wielding a shovel inside the library and issuing death threats, while other RAKSU and Shibir officials were captured physically striking students with sticks and chairs. Despite the presence of university authorities, including the proctor, attackers were seen landing punches and kicks, with faculty intervention required only to prevent the use of furniture as weapons.
Campus student organizations have condemned the incident as “mob terrorism,” demanding an impartial investigation and accountability for those involved. The assault marks a stark departure from the university’s historical precedents; as recently as 2014, when over a hundred students sought refuge in the library during protests against evening courses, faculty members formed a protective human shield to ensure their safety without a single act of violence occurring.

Defending the actions, RAKSU General Secretary Salauddin Ammar claimed that he and his associates had sought to hand the students over to authorities following an alleged provocation, accusing the administration of inaction against rival political factions. Conversely, Shibir campus secretary Mehedi Hasan denied the organization’s involvement, maintaining that their members arrived only after the unrest had already begun.
Prominent faculty members have expressed profound shame regarding the event. Associate Professor of Economics Golam Sarwar, who was among those who protected students in 2014, noted the irony that students are now being assaulted by their own elected representatives. Professor A-Al Mamun of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism labeled the incident a total degradation of university culture, asserting that such brutality—carried out under the gaze of administration officials—is a grave violation of the campus’s educational mandate.
