Man Bathes in Milk to Mark End of 17-Year Marriage Following Wifes Departure in Sunamganj

A man in Sunamganj’s Dowarabazar Upazila has ended his 17-year marriage by bathing in 40 liters of milk after his wife allegedly left him for another man. The unusual ritual, captured in a video that has since circulated widely on social media, has sparked intense public discussion in the region.

The man, who recently returned to Bangladesh after working for several years in Saudi Arabia, stated that he had been aware of his wife’s extramarital affair for approximately a year. Despite his efforts to resolve the situation and reconcile their relationship, the woman reportedly left their home last Tuesday without informing the family to reside with her lover.

Following the departure, the man convened a meeting with community elders on Saturday to formally dissolve the marriage. Shortly thereafter, he performed the public cleansing ritual. In the viral video, the man declares himself “free” and “purified,” claiming that his previous domestic life had been tainted by his wife’s infidelity and the misappropriation of his hard-earned foreign remittances.

The man further alleged that his wife had exhausted the funds he sent from abroad to support her lover before abandoning their three children—two daughters and one son—and the household. He characterized the milk bath as a symbolic gesture to mark the end of a relationship that had caused him significant personal dishonor.

The woman could not be reached for comment, as her mobile phone remained switched off. Police in Dowarabazar confirmed that the man she allegedly eloped with was arrested on Saturday night in connection with a separate, pending legal case, preventing any further inquiry into her whereabouts.

Officer-in-Charge of Dowarabazar Police Station, Tarikul Islam, confirmed on Sunday that authorities are aware of the circulating footage. As of now, no formal complaints regarding the incident have been filed with local law enforcement.
