Five police officers wounded as notorious criminal Mubarak Hossain arrested following shootout in Fatikchhari

CHITTAGONG – A high-stakes operation by the Chittagong District Police led to the arrest of a notorious underworld figure known as Mubarak Hossain, the second-in-command of the jailed criminal David Emon. The suspect, nicknamed “Gala Kata Mubarak” (Throat-Slitter Mubarak), was apprehended early Wednesday following a fierce gunbattle in Fatikchhari.
The operation, which took place in a house in Lelang Union, resulted in injuries to five police officers, including Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kazi Md. Tareq Aziz. The standoff occurred after police surrounded the property based on intelligence regarding Mubarak’s whereabouts.
According to officials, Mubarak attempted to evade capture by hiding in a false ceiling within the home’s washroom. When officers breached the iron door of the residence, the suspect opened fire, discharging six rounds at the police team. ASP Tareq Aziz, Officer-in-Charge of Fatikchhari Police Station Rabiul Alam Khan, and three constables—Mamunur Rashid, Shah Newaz, and Saddam Hossain—sustained injuries during the exchange.
The standoff ended when Mubarak’s firearm jammed, allowing officers to pull him from the ceiling and take him into custody. Authorities recovered a Brazilian-made Taurus pistol from the suspect, which investigation records indicate was among the weapons looted from the Kotwali Police Station on August 5, 2024.
Police also apprehended three of Mubarak’s associates at the scene: Md. Raihan, Md. Farid, and Md. Nasir. Officers recovered three pistols, 23 rounds of ammunition, and four shotgun shells during the search.
Chittagong District Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Masud Alam confirmed that Mubarak had been utilizing remote mountainous regions as a safe haven to evade law enforcement. Upon his arrest, the suspect reportedly confessed to his involvement in several high-profile crimes, including the murder of Juba Dal leader Masud in Raozan.
ASP Tareq Aziz, who led the operation, noted that the arrest followed a series of intelligence-led raids across the district. After the arrest of David Emon on July 29, police tracked Mubarak’s movements through his associates, culminating in the siege of the Lelang Union residence.
Following the arrest, a court granted police an eight-day remand for Mubarak, split between cases involving the looting of state weapons and the armed assault on law enforcement officers.
The arrest has provided significant relief to residents in Fatikchhari, Raozan, and the surrounding city areas. Local business owner Md. Absar Uddin Chowdhury, who had been forced to flee his home after being targeted by Mubarak’s gang in May, expressed hope that the suspect would remain incarcerated, citing the long-standing climate of fear the criminal syndicate had imposed on the local community.
