Dhaka University honors 62 faculty members for excellence in research and high citation impact

DHAKA — The University of Dhaka honored 62 faculty members and researchers on Thursday in recognition of their exceptional contributions to academic research and for elevating the institution’s global standing. The recipients were selected for achieving 2,000 or more citations on their respective Google Scholar profiles.

The award ceremony was held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, with the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor A.B.M. Obaidul Islam, presiding as the chief guest. The event was chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Abdus Salam, while Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammad Almojadadedy Alfe-Sani and Treasurer Professor M. Addressing the assembly, Vice-Chancellor Obaidul Islam urged the honorees to lead the university’s transition into a research-intensive institution to improve its position in international rankings. He emphasized that government funding alone is insufficient for such an advancement, noting that the university is actively seeking collaboration with alumni and the industrial sector to secure its long-term goals.

The university is currently drafting a 20-year academic development plan, the Vice-Chancellor noted. Efforts are underway to establish two separate endowment funds of 1 billion taka each—one dedicated to research and the other for student welfare. Furthermore, the administration is prioritizing “lab-to-lab” and “researcher-to-researcher” partnerships with prestigious international universities to invigorate the academic ecosystem.
