World Cup Fandom Turns Violent in Laxmipur as Flag Dispute Leads to Assault

A dispute over the display of international football team flags escalated into physical violence in the Lakshmipur Sadar upazila on Monday, leaving one person hospitalized with a head injury.
The altercation occurred in the Jatrapur Tulagachtola area under Chandraganj police station as fans prepared for the upcoming World Cup. According to local residents, a group of young men were attempting to hang an Argentine flag when they were confronted by supporters of the Brazilian national team.
The tension quickly devolved into a heated verbal exchange between two local residents, identified as Azad Hossain and Rifat Hossain. Witnesses report that the confrontation turned physical when Rifat allegedly struck Azad on the head with a stick, resulting in a severe laceration. Bystanders intervened to rescue the victim, who was subsequently transported to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Azad Hossain alleged that the assault was unprovoked and occurred solely because he and his companions were decorating the area with Argentine colors.
Rifat Hossain has denied the allegations, characterizing the interaction as a minor disagreement. He stated to Prothom Alo that while a verbal dispute over the flags did occur, he did not engage in any physical violence against the victim.
Chandraganj Police Station officer-in-charge Morshed Alam confirmed that authorities responded to reports of a skirmish between football supporters. Police visited the scene to assess the situation, though officials noted that no formal complaint has been filed by either party. The department maintains that a thorough investigation will follow if a written complaint is submitted.
