Christensen is confident of taking Bangladesh-US relations to new heights

Brent Christensen, the US Ambassador to Bangladesh, expressed hope for strengthening bilateral relations and said that under the clear outline of President Donald Trump, Washington is working to take relations with Dhaka to a higher level.
In a video message on the 100th anniversary of joining as ambassador to Bangladesh on Wednesday, the ambassador said, ‘After 100 days, I am more optimistic about the future of US-Bangladesh relations. I look forward to seeing what else we can achieve in the future.’
The ambassador said, ‘A historic trade agreement has been signed between Bangladesh and the United States. The agreement was made with the aim of balancing the trade deficit and mutual prosperity. I have relentlessly encouraged US businesses to develop business relationships in Bangladesh.
Christensen said the two countries are cooperating in curbing illegal immigration and building a “closer security partnership” for a free and open Indo-Pacific. He said, “We are working on a new health partnership with Bangladesh to combat various diseases including tuberculosis, measles.”
The ambassador said the United States remains the largest donor to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and will continue to work toward a political solution to the crisis.
Speaking about his time in Bangladesh, the ambassador said he received a warm welcome from the people and enjoyed immersing himself in the country’s culture, including Paola Baisakh festival, cricket, local food.
The US ambassador said, “There was nothing more to ask for.” I have come at an important time, right before Bangladesh’s historic February elections.’ He noted that the US was the first country to recognize the election results and congratulated the new government led by Prime Minister Tariq Rahman.
The ambassador said he has worked on US policy towards Bangladesh and the wider region for more than two decades and reiterated his commitment to advancing American interests and strengthening bilateral relations.
President Md. Christensen last January 15 at Bangabhaban. Presented his credentials to Sahabuddin and expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh.
The ambassador also said that in the last five decades, Bangladesh and the United States have worked together to uphold regional stability, economic growth and sovereignty.
