Water in testing center in Comilla: Prime Minister directed city administrator to take action

Students participated in the SSC examination on Tuesday in a waterlogged room at Ishwar Pathshala (High School) center in Comilla. Some take the test with their feet on the bench, some with their feet in the water. Prime Minister Tariq Rahman called the administrator of Comilla City Corporation and ordered to take necessary measures after the news was published in various media including Prothom Alo.
Comilla City Corporation Administrator Yusuf Mollah (Tipu) visited Ishwar Pathshala (High School) today on Wednesday. He wants to know what is causing the waterlogging. Besides, he assured to take initiatives to reduce waterlogging permanently. At that time, acting chief executive officer of City Corporation Mohammad Mamun along with engineers and related officials were present.
Yusuf Molla said about this, “Prothom Alo’s news about flooding in Ishwar Pathshala came to the notice of the honorable Prime Minister. He then called me and gave instructions to solve the problem quickly. I came to visit the school after receiving a call from the Honorable Prime Minister. We have already taken massive initiatives to solve the problem of waterlogging in the city. The canals that were obstructing the flow of water when there was flooding yesterday; Every canal is cleaned. Our work is still ongoing. We are already seeing the results of the work. Although there has been heavy rain in the city since this morning, there has been no waterlogging anywhere. The water is going down fast now.’
Yusuf Molla also said, “Most of the city’s water falls into the Dakatiya River through the Guingajhuri Canal. In the outer part of the city, the canal was dumped into a dam-like condition. We worked all night to remove it and restore the water flow. Even after coming to this school, I saw the results; Today you see there is no flooding here either.
Ishwar Pathshala (College) was established in 1914. Danveer Mahesh Chandra Bhattacharya founded the school. According to school sources, this time 608 people are giving SSC exam in this center. Among them, 216 people are giving the exam in 4 rooms of the old one-story tinshed building. During the examination of English paper II yesterday, the building got waterlogged due to rain. After this incident, it was decided to move the students of those 4 rooms to another building of the school. Next Thursday’s SSC exam will be held in 6 rooms including the head teacher’s room in the adjacent 6-storey building.
Today at around 11 o’clock, it is seen that the rainwater has moved away from the old one-storied tin shed building on the west side of the Ishwar Pathshala (high school) grounds. On Tuesday, the entire school grounds including the field were submerged in water. But today there is no flooding. It rained this morning. Some water has accumulated on one side of the school ground.
Shudhanshu Kumar Majumdar, head teacher of Ishwar Pathshala (high school), told Prothom Alo, “On Tuesday morning, heavy rain caused flooding. There was no problem at the start of the test. Around 12 noon, the examination room was submerged in water. There was no opportunity to evacuate the examinees even if there was a desire then. Due to the building crisis in the hundred year old school, the examination was conducted in the old building. The problem of waterlogging here is long-standing.
Shudhanshu Kumar Majumdar also said, “After the news was published in the first light, there has been a huge impact on the matter.” In the meantime many government officials starting from the Deputy Commissioner have visited the school. The administrator of the city corporation came and said that the honorable prime minister also knew about the matter. We want a new building here. He also demanded to take initiatives to permanently solve the waterlogging including raising the ground.
According to City Corporation sources, most of the city’s water is discharged through Noagaon Railgate Guingajhuri Canal Point, Sultanpur Canal of Ward No. 22, Tamjid Filling Station on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, Guingajhuri Canal and Race Course Canal. But these canals were practically stopped due to garbage dumping. After yesterday’s flooding, the canals were immediately cleared and water flow was restored. Now the water is moving fast. Every canal and drain in the city will be cleaned in stages.
