Vandals Desecrate Hindu Temple Idols in Mymensingh

Unidentified assailants vandalized a Hindu temple in Tarakanda, Mymensingh, overnight on Thursday, prompting a police investigation into the desecration of several religious idols. Local residents discovered the destruction on Friday morning, finding multiple statues within the Kali temple shattered.
The temple, situated in the courtyard of a home belonging to the Debnath family in Rambhadrapur village, has served the community for approximately 14 years. According to Apu Debnath, who filed a general diary with the Tarakanda police, the damage was extensive. The vandals destroyed the head and four arms of the Shyama Kali idol, along with the head and arms of the Mahadev, Dakini, Yogini, and Saraswati statues.

The site remained largely unsecured, shielded only by a bamboo fence. Apu Debnath noted that the temple appeared intact when daily rituals concluded the previous evening, and residents confirmed the idols were undisturbed as late as 1 a.m. Friday. By 6 a.m., when the family awoke to start their morning routine, the damage had been discovered.
Members of the local community expressed shock and concern over the incident, stating that they have maintained peaceful relations with their neighbors for over a decade and have no known adversaries. While the family remains fearful, they have opted not to file a formal criminal case, choosing instead to document the incident through a general diary.

Tarakanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Abdur Rashid confirmed that authorities inspected the scene shortly after the report. Police have launched an investigation into the matter to identify the perpetrators responsible for the vandalism.
