The Ministry of Agriculture canceled two days after issuing the notification for the post of Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BR) in Gazipur. This information was informed in a notification of the ministry on Tuesday.
The order regarding the appointment of DG issued on May 3 has been cancelled, the notification said. Additional Secretary (Research) in the Ministry of Agriculture has been given additional charge as Finance Officer against the vacant post of Director General of BRI in addition to his own duties until further orders. It is also mentioned that he will get allowance as per rules for performing the duties.

However, a source in the Ministry of Agriculture said that a decision on the appointment of a new director general may come soon.
Note that on May 3, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Chief Scientific Officer Aminul Islam was given the responsibility of the new Director General. There was tension between the two parties throughout the day on Monday around his appointment. Immediately after the appointment, a section of scientists and officials of the institute staged a protest calling the new DG a “friend of fascism” and “corrupt” and demanding cancellation of the appointment. Another party took a counter position. They claim that the appointment has been done in due process.

From yesterday morning, both sides took stand with banners and people in front of the Director General’s office and chanted slogans. A section of the protesters went on strike by locking various rooms of the institute. Research and administrative activities practically came to a standstill.
