Two more candidates challenged the result of the vote in the High Court

The High Court will hear separate election petitions filed by two more candidates challenging the results of the polls in two constituencies in the 13th National Assembly elections. The applications have been taken up for hearing. Justice Md. Single High Court bench of Zakir Hossain gave this order on Wednesday.

The two candidates who applied are Jamaat-e-Islami candidate AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad in Cox’s Bazar-2 seat and Faizul Haque, Jamaat’s candidate in Jhalkathi-1 seat. Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah was elected in Cox’s Bazar-2 seat by getting 1 lakh 24 thousand 660 votes. Jamaat’s candidate Hamidur Rahman Azad got 89 thousand 817 votes in the seat. And BNP candidate Rafiqul Islam was elected in Jhalkathi-1 seat by getting 62 thousand 10 votes. Jamaat’s candidate Faizul Haque got 55 thousand 120 votes in the seat.

Senior lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir appeared for the petitioners in the court. Later he told Prothom Alo that the two candidates filed two separate election petitions alleging irregularities and rigging in the voting. Accepting the application for two hearings, the High Court directed the Election Commission to preserve the necessary equipment along with the ballots of the two constituencies concerned.

After the gazette publication of election results, if a rival candidate has any objection or complaint about the National Assembly election, he can file an election petition in the High Court. The Chief Justice appointed a single bench in the High Court on February 17 to receive and hear election-related petitions. From last February 26 to March 12, 36 separate election petitions of 36 candidates were accepted for hearing by that bench of the High Court. Thereafter, another single bench took up five separate election petitions for hearing.
