Merchants robbed of $35,000 en route to nut market by boat

A group of bandits looted approximately 3.5 million Bangladeshi Taka ($30,000 USD) from nut traders on the Meghna River between Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria and Bhairab in Kishoreganj on Saturday morning. The traders were subsequently rescued by police from the Bhairab river police station.
The incident occurred around 5:45 AM as the traders’ boat reached a point midway between the Bhairab and Ashuganj river mouths. According to the traders, a second engine-powered boat carrying the assailants approached from behind and rammed their vessel. The robbers then boarded, took the traders hostage, and made off with the cash stored in sacks before making a swift escape.

Upon receiving news of the robbery, police from the Bhairab river police station launched a search operation using a speedboat. They located and rescued the distressed traders in the middle of the river. Police also managed to recover the boat abandoned by the fleeing robbers in the Ashuganj area.
The officer-in-charge of the Bhairab river police station, Md. Moniruzzaman, confirmed the robbery and stated that preparations are underway to file a case. He added that a manhunt is being organized to apprehend the perpetrators.
