Miscreants entered the church in Baridhara of the capital last Tuesday late night and tied the hands, feet and face of the church director and looted Tk 2.5 lakh. In connection with the robbery by cutting the top of the boundary wall and grill of ‘D Majend Church’, the police said that they have arrested three people in the remote area of Ramgatti Char area of Dhaka and Lakshmipur district from Thursday morning to Friday morning. 2 lakh 48 thousand taka, 1 passport, 1 national identity card and grill cutting tools were recovered from them.
The arrested persons are Abul Hossain Ratan alias Habu (36), Mohammad Nizam alias Mizan (37) and Akhter Hossain Mana alias Monir (38).

According to the police, the arrested persons are highly addicted to drugs and online gambling. They planned this robbery to collect gambling and drug money.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Tanveer Ahmed said in a press conference that the incident happened on April 28 (Thursday). At around 2.30 am that day, two criminals wearing face masks climbed over the walls of the de Majend church and first closed the doors of the church servants’ rooms from the outside. Later, they cut the grill of the church director Father Subas Pulak Gomez’s office room and entered, tied the father’s hands, feet and face, opened the cupboard of the office room and looted two and a half lakh taka, a passport and a national identity card and other necessary documents. Later, with the help of another miscreant, they climbed over the wall in a battery-powered rickshaw and escaped.
After the incident, a police officer of Bhatara police station registered a case of dacoity. The police analyzed the CCTV footage during the investigation. In it, a battery-powered rickshaw can be seen moving suspiciously near the church. The police identified the rickshaw driver Akhtar Hossain alias Mana by verifying the information of thousands of rickshaws and drivers of different garages in Dhaka. With the help of technology, he was first arrested from Mugda area of the capital and Tk 1 lakh and the rickshaw used in the robbery were recovered from him. Based on the information given by Akter, Mizan was arrested from the remote Char area of Ramgatti in Laxmipur district. 48 thousand rupees were recovered from him. Abul Hossain, who planned this incident, was arrested from Amtala in Khilkhet of the capital. 1 lakh rupees, passport and national identity card were recovered from him.
Police officer Tanveer Ahmed said that all the arrested three are extremely addicted to drugs and online gambling. They plan this robbery to collect gambling and drug money. There are eight cases against the arrested Abul Hossain in various police stations including Khilkhet of the capital. There is a dacoity case against Mizan at Comilla’s Lalmai police station and a drug case against Akter at Chittagong’s Halishahar police station. Whether anyone else is involved in this cycle is being investigated.
In response to a question, police officer Tanveer said, Easter Sunday went recently, they thought there was a lot of money. According to that plan, they brought a battery operated rickshaw from Mugda. The rickshaw puller was their accomplice, he was guarding from outside. And the other two went inside and tied up the father and took the money and even the passport.
When contacted in the afternoon, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhatara Police Station, Mazharul Islam told Prothom Alo that the arrested persons admitted their involvement in the church loot during initial interrogation. Later they were sent to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court of Dhaka. After the hearing, the court ordered to send them to jail.
