Police secure mortar shell discovered by laborers in Panchagarh riverbed

Local laborers extracting sand and stone from the Chilka River in Panchagarh discovered a discarded mortar shell on Wednesday evening, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
The discovery occurred around 6:30 p.m. when a group of workers noticed a metallic, rod-like object entangled in their equipment while dredging the riverbed in the Satmera Union. Recognizing the potential danger of the device, the laborers transported it to the Jhitkikhura area, where local resident Abdus Salam identified the object as a mortar shell and immediately alerted the authorities.

Panchagarh Sadar Police arrived at the scene and recovered the ordnance at approximately 11:45 p.m. According to Ashraful Islam, the officer-in-charge of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station, the shell was heavily corroded, rendering any markings or identification numbers illegible.
The device is currently being held in a secure location under police supervision. Officials have contacted the Bangladesh Army’s bomb disposal unit to inspect the shell and manage its safe disposal, as investigators work to determine the origin of the abandoned explosive.
