Police in Mymensingh recovered the decapitated remains of a 26-year-old tree-felling laborer on Wednesday night, ending a week-long search for the missing man. The gruesome discovery was made at a construction site near Ambikaganj College, where officials were alerted by a foul odor emanating from the grounds.

The victim, identified as Sohel Mia, had been reported missing by his family on July 16, shortly after he left his home in Mirkan dapara. According to local reports, Sohel’s father had filed a formal police complaint regarding his disappearance only hours before the remains were found.

The investigation began when faculty members at Ambikaganj College noticed a strong stench while surveying land for a new academic building. Upon searching the perimeter of the campus, they discovered a severed human head discarded in the grass. Investigators believe the remains had been buried in shallow soil but were partially exhumed by animals, leading to the rapid spread of the odor.

Following the initial discovery, authorities cordoned off the area and conducted a search of the immediate vicinity. After unearthing a pair of gloves near the site, police excavated the earth and discovered the headless torso buried several feet deep. The remains were subsequently transported to the Mymensingh Medical College morgue for post-mortem examination.

Identity confirmation was expedited by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) through fingerprint analysis, supported by visual identification of the victim’s clothing by his relatives. Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police, Ashraful Karim, confirmed that the body matched the description and identity of the missing laborer.

Family members have raised significant concerns regarding the circumstances leading up to Sohel’s death. According to the victim’s father-in-law, Alal Uddin, Sohel had been lured from his home on the night of his disappearance by his brother-in-law, Salim Mia, under the guise of an offer for employment. Uddin noted that the two men had a history of disputes over wages from their shared work as tree cutters. Reports indicate that Salim Mia fled the area on Tuesday, shortly before the remains were uncovered.

Local police are currently treating the incident as a homicide. While official legal proceedings are underway, authorities are focused on locating suspects and determining the precise chain of events that led to the victim’s disappearance and subsequent death.
