Public outcry mounts in Chittagong following viral video of dog killings

Animal rights activists in Chittagong are demanding legal action after a video surfaced on social media appearing to show the brutal killing of two dogs in the city’s Chandgaon area. The footage, which has sparked widespread outrage, depicts two men repeatedly striking a dog with sticks while others watch nearby, with a second deceased animal visible on the ground.
The incident, which reportedly took place on July 22, has been linked to two local residents, identified by activists as Mohammad Ridoy and Rafi. Nahian Nakib, founder of the Animal Rescue Team Chittagong, confirmed that his organization verified the video before submitting formal complaints to both the Chandgaon police station and the district livestock officer.

Nakib criticized the current handling of the case, noting that authorities have yet to detain the suspects and instead directed activists to pursue the matter through a magistrate’s court. He argued that the incident underscores the lack of effective enforcement regarding the Animal Welfare Act of 2019. Activists are questioning why citizens are forced to pursue private litigation when clear video evidence of animal cruelty exists, urging the Department of Livestock Services to take a more proactive role in investigating and prosecuting perpetrators.
In response, Chandgaon police sub-inspector Mohammad Mizanur Rahman stated that officers visited the site but were unable to locate the carcasses. According to the police report, local residents claimed the dogs had been killed because they allegedly bit children and killed poultry. Mizanur added that the identities of the men in the video could not be immediately confirmed, and a report has been submitted to superiors.

District Livestock Officer Mohammad Alamgir confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that an investigation is underway. He has instructed department officials to conduct a site visit and submit a detailed report on the matter.
Advocates contend that under the Animal Welfare Act, unnecessary violence toward animals is a punishable offense. They warn that failing to set a legal precedent in this case may lead to an increase in public acts of animal cruelty. The incident continues to draw condemnation online, with public figures and environmental activists joining calls for a swift and impartial investigation to ensure the perpetrators face justice.
