In the anti-discrimination student movement in Magura, two lawyers’ offices were attacked and vandalized over the bail of two accused in the murder case of Chhatra Dal leader Mehdi Hasan Rabbi. The incident took place in front of the District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Zilapara area of the city on Monday around 1.30 pm next to the Lawyers’ Association.
It is said that after talking to the two lawyers who confessed to the attack on the office, the lawyer Habibur Rahman (Labu) and Md. A group of 40 to 50 people attacked two separate offices of Ujjwal Hossain. They vandalized various furniture including chairs, tables, cupboards, computers. At that time, the attackers accused these two lawyers of helping to get bail for the two accused in the murder case of Mehdi Hasan Rabbi, the senior joint secretary of Shahid Zilla Chhatra Dal in the anti-discrimination student movement. But who carried out this attack, these two lawyers could not immediately confirm their identity.
If you want to know, the lawyer said. Ujjal Hossain said, “I don’t know much about this. An accused has been granted bail by the High Court, just signed the bail bond. Being a relative of one of my assistants, I signed the bail bond of accused No. 9 Hedayet Quraish in front of that case. I don’t know more than that. I heard that my office was attacked for this.
On the other hand, lawyer Habibur Rahman said that around 1:30 p.m., 40-50 people suddenly came and ransacked his chamber within 2-3 minutes. It damaged tables, chairs and cupboards.
Habibur Rahman also said that his client Azim, the accused in the rabbi murder case, got bail about two months ago. The attack revolved around Azim’s bail and the recent bail of lawyer Ujjwal’s client Hedayet Quraish.
Expressing grief over the incident, President of Magura District Lawyers Association Mizanur Rahman said, “It is not yet confirmed who did this vandalism.” We will form an inquiry committee to uncover the truth of the incident and action will be taken against those responsible.
The officer in charge of Magura Sadar police station said that no written complaint has been received yet. Ashiqur Rahman. He said that necessary legal measures will be taken if complaints are received.
Mehdi Hasan, Senior Joint General Secretary of District Chhatra Dal, was shot dead in Parnanduali area on August 4, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement. Yunus Ali, the brother of the person killed in this incident, filed a case at Magura Sadar police station on the night of August 13, mentioning the names of 13 people, including two former members of parliament, and accusing 150-200 unknown people.
According to the sources of Magura District Jail, Azim, son of Jahangir Sheikh of Barunatail village, accused in the murder case of Chhatra Dal leader Mehedi Hasan, was released on bail on March 30. He was in jail since May 13, 2025. On the other hand, the accused in the same case, Hedayet Koraish, son of Nazrul Islam of Parnanduali village, was released on bail on April 23. He was in jail since March 8, 2025. At present, 4 accused arrested in this case are in the district jail.
