Household Brutality in Akhaura: Salon Worker Cuts Wife’s Hair After Extorting Lakhs for Dowry

AKHAURA, BRAHMANBARIA — A horrifying incident of domestic violence has emerged from Ramdhannagar village in Akhaura Upazila, where a housewife was brutally beaten and had her hair forcibly chopped off by her husband and in-laws after refusing to pay an additional BDT 5 lakh in dowry. The victim, 30-year-old Mim Akhter, filed a formal criminal lawsuit against her husband and father-in-law on Tuesday afternoon following her rescue.
Mim, the daughter of Zahirul Islam from nearby Azampur village, had married Deen Islam (also known as Dinu Mia) through a court ceremony in 2019 following a romantic relationship. The couple shares a five-and-a-half-year-old son. However, family members revealed that the marriage quickly deteriorated into a cycle of financial exploitation and physical abuse.
A History of Systematic Financial Extortion
Deen Islam, a salon worker currently employed in Narsingdi who previously worked in Dhaka’s upscale Bashundhara area, has a long history of demanding money from his wife’s family. According to Mim, she had already capitulated to his demands in multiple phases to help him establish businesses:
- Initial Installments: Paid BDT 60,000, BDT 1,00,000, and BDT 31,000 in three separate cash tranches.
- Asset Liquidation: Pawned two heavy gold ornaments to raise BDT 3,00,000, combining it with an additional BDT 1,00,000 from her father.
- Business Venture: Deen Islam used the collective BDT 4,00,000 to open a clothing store at the Singerbil Market in neighboring Bijoynagar Upazila, only to liquidate and sell off the shop a year later.
Despite receiving substantial financial support, Deen Islam allegedly maintained extramarital affairs in Narsingdi and continued to subject his wife to frequent physical assaults whenever he returned home. The latest dispute arose over the past two months, during which Deen Islam and his parents began demanding a fresh sum of BDT 5 lakh to open a new salon in Narsingdi.
The Ambush and Assault
The abuse escalated drastically on Monday night when Deen Islam arrived from Narsingdi. The following morning, he violently assaulted Mim when she reiterated her family’s inability to pay the BDT 5 lakh. He then confiscated her mobile phone, declaring that he would dissolve the marriage if the money was not delivered, before leaving the house.
On Tuesday afternoon, Deen Islam contacted Mim, instructing her to walk down an isolated lane outside the house to retrieve her phone. When she arrived, he ambushed her.
“He demanded that I surrender the gold earrings I was wearing,” Mim recounted from her hospital bed, visibly traumatized. “When I refused, he punched me squarely in the nose. I fell to my knees from the impact. As I tried to scream for help, he clamped his hand over my mouth, stabbing at my face and cheeks. I literally begged at his feet for my life. In a fit of rage, he pulled out a pair of shears and cut off my hair.”
The assault was interrupted when Mim’s family members heard the commotion and rushed to the scene, causing Deen Islam to flee into hiding.
Medical Status and Legal Proceedings
Mim was immediately rescued by her relatives and rushed to the Akhaura Upazila Health Complex. She was later transferred to the Brahmanbaria General Hospital for advanced treatment due to the severity of the facial and nasal trauma she sustained.
Local law enforcement confirmed that a case has been officially registered under the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act. Local sources report that Deen Islam turned off his cellular device and went completely into hiding immediately after the lawsuit was filed. Police units are currently conducting raids to apprehend the fugitive husband and his father-in-law.
