Education, health and employment sectors will get the highest priority in the national budget of the upcoming financial year, said the Minister of State for Planning Md. Jonaid Abdur Rahim Saki (Jonayed Saki).

The Minister of State for Planning said this while participating in the pre-budget discussion meeting on ‘Education Budget: Budgetary Education’ organized by Mass Literacy Campaign at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Agargaon in the capital today.

Jonaid Saki said, ‘Education, health, employment – these will be given priority in the upcoming budget. I repeat, education, health, employment will be given top priority.

Talking about the backwardness of the education standard in Bangladesh, the state minister said, everyone admits…it cannot meet the needs of Bangladesh. It is not even close to international standards.

Bobby Hajjaz, Minister of State for Primary and Mass Education, said that primary education will be upgraded step by step up to eighth grade. He said, want to provide free education for 4 to 13 year olds. The minister also said, ‘I want to increase the primary grade up to eighth….I will do it step by step.’

At present primary education is up to class V and is unpaid.

Rasheda K Chowdhury, Executive Director of Mass Literacy Campaign and Advisor on Primary and Mass Education of the former Caretaker Government, also spoke on the occasion, Head of the Consultative Committee on Primary and Secondary Education formed by the Interim Government, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad, Education Adviser of the British High Commission, Mohammad Golam Kibria, Professor Sharmind Nilormi of the Economics Department of Jahangirnagar University.

Mostafizur Rahman, Deputy Director of Mass Literacy Campaign presented various information related to the budget of the education sector in the event. Abdur Rauf, Program Manager of Mass Literacy Campaign, highlighted the demands in the memorandum.
