Netrokona Man Dies by Suicide After Son’s Wedding Collapses Over Prior Relationship Claims

A wedding ceremony in Netrokona’s Purbadhala upazila ended in tragedy Wednesday after an unexpected confrontation led to the cancellation of the nuptials and the subsequent suicide of the groom’s father.
The incident occurred in Panishana village, where 50-year-old Suruj Mia was found dead by hanging from a mango tree near his home late Wednesday night. Family members believe the patriarch took his own life due to the intense social stigma and emotional distress caused by the collapse of his son’s wedding.
The trouble began mid-afternoon when the groom, Helal Mia—a garment factory driver in Gazipur—arrived at the bride’s home with a wedding party. As the rituals were nearing completion, a young woman from Kurigram’s Kachakata upazila arrived, accompanied by her cousin. She publicly claimed to have been in a 10-month romantic relationship with Helal and alleged that the two had previously planned to marry. She further accused Helal of cutting off communication to pursue a different bride.
The revelation sparked immediate uproar at the ceremony, forcing the wedding to be called off. The groom’s family ultimately reached a settlement with the bride’s family, paying 50,000 taka in compensation before departing the venue.
According to family members and local residents, Suruj Mia was devastated by the public humiliation. He disappeared from his home shortly after returning from the failed ceremony, and his body was discovered by relatives at approximately 11:00 p.m.
Following the discovery, police recovered the body and transferred it to the Netrokona Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Suruj Mia’s brother, Tara Mia, filed a formal complaint on Thursday accusing the woman who disrupted the wedding and his nephew, Helal Mia, of abetment to suicide.
Purbadhala Police Station officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that the woman has been arrested in connection with the case. Helal Mia remains at large, and police are actively searching for him as the investigation continues.
