**Seven national heroes’ sculptures desecrated during Tangail fair**
TANGIAL, Bangladesh – A fair organized by the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has drawn widespread condemnation after its event ropes were tied around the necks of sculptures depicting seven of Bangladesh’s national heroes at the Shaheed Smriti Municipal Park. The incident, which occurred on the final day of the fair on Sunday night, gained public attention when a photograph of the desecration was widely shared on social media, sparking outrage and demands for accountability.
According to local reports, the fair, designed to showcase products from small and cottage industry entrepreneurs, led to the erection of numerous stalls throughout the park. Some of these stalls were placed directly in front of the revered sculptures of the Bir Shresthos, the highest-ranking military gallantry awards recipients of Bangladesh. The fair was inaugurated on April 24 by Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.
The photograph, circulating on Facebook, shows the ropes used to secure the fair stalls being tied to the necks of the Bir Shrestho sculptures. Social media users expressed their deep dismay and anger, with many criticizing the perceived lack of respect for the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence. One widely shared post by user Mir Nasimul Islam, a former general secretary of Udichi, Tangail district unit, decried the act as not merely mismanagement but an “insult to history.”
Another user, Al Amin, a leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, questioned how such an act could occur, stating, “On whose blood this country was liberated, today their necks are bound by fair ropes for business. Has dust fallen into the eyes of the fair authorities and the administration?” Many citizens have called for stern punishment for those responsible for the incident.
Shamsul Huda, a seasoned educationist and former principal of Government MM Ali College, stated that constructing stalls in front of the Bir Shrestho sculptures was inappropriate. He further condemned the act of tying fair ropes around their necks as reprehensible and urged concerned authorities to remain vigilant to prevent future occurrences.
When contacted, Shahnaz Begum, Assistant General Manager of BSCIC in Tangail district, stated that she was unaware of who was responsible for the act, which occurred on the ninth day of the fair. She confirmed that the ropes were immediately removed once the matter was brought to BSCIC’s attention.
