Bangladesh Coast Guard Strengthens Security Measures in Sundarbans to Curb Criminal Activity

Bangladesh Coast Guard Director General Rear Admiral Mohammad Ziaul Hoque has reaffirmed the force’s commitment to curbing piracy, drug trafficking, and human smuggling, underscoring its role in maintaining stability across the Sundarbans and surrounding coastal regions. Speaking to journalists at the Harbaria station in Mongla, Bagerhat, on Thursday, the Director General emphasized that the maritime agency remains in a state of high readiness to protect natural resources and ensure the safety of local communities.

The Coast Guard has been spearheading specialized operations, including “Operation Restore Peace in the Sundarbans” and “Operation Mangrove Shield,” to dismantle criminal networks. According to Admiral Hoque, these sustained campaigns, supported by enhanced intelligence-gathering and inter-agency coordination, have significantly weakened pirate groups and led to a marked improvement in the region’s overall security landscape.

Addressing a recent incident in the Joymonir Ghol area, where criminal elements attacked and vandalized the Harbaria Coast Guard station, Admiral Hoque condemned the act as both deplorable and an attempt to undermine vital law enforcement efforts. He confirmed that authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify the perpetrators. The Director General warned that those involved will face strict legal consequences, stressing that the force will not tolerate actions that jeopardize the safety of the Sundarbans or the integrity of government infrastructure.

In a message to the coastal population, Admiral Hoque urged citizens to remain vigilant against misinformation and to continue their cooperation with law enforcement agencies. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity or criminal threats directly to the Coast Guard’s emergency hotline, 16111, to ensure the preservation of the forest’s biodiversity and the security of those who depend on it for their livelihoods.
