Student wing leader expelled following murder of wife in Savar

Police in Savar have launched a manhunt for a local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader accused of murdering his wife following a domestic dispute. The victim, 21-year-old Riya Moni, was found dead inside their rented apartment in the Chhayabithi residential area on Monday afternoon.
Riya Moni, whose parents reside abroad, had been living with her uncle, Saddam Hossain, in the Sobhanbag area prior to her marriage. Approximately 18 months ago, she married Rony Chowdhury, 22, a resident of Kushtia’s Islamic University area who had been living in Savar with his family for several years.
According to initial reports, the victim’s uncle discovered the crime after being alerted to the tragedy at noon on Monday. Upon arriving at the residence, he found the apartment locked from the outside. When his search for the husband proved unsuccessful, he notified the Savar Model Police. Officers arrived at the scene, broke down the door, and recovered Riya Moni’s body from the bed.
Following the discovery, the local political leadership took swift action. Mahfuz Iqbal, general secretary of the JCD’s Dhaka North district unit, stated that while the incident was domestic in nature, the organization maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding such actions. Consequently, Chowdhury has been expelled from the party.
Savar Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Nur Mohammad confirmed that the victim’s uncle filed a case late Monday night, naming Chowdhury and two to three unidentified accomplices as suspects. While investigators suspect that the victim was strangled, the body has been sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. Law enforcement officials noted that efforts to locate and apprehend the primary suspect are currently underway.
