Suspected thief escapes from custody by jumping into river while handcuffed

A man accused of theft escaped custody on Friday night by leaping from a moving boat into a river in Bangladesh’s Sunamganj district while his hands were still bound. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Rony Das, successfully fled into the waters of the Boroiya River near Shekhergaon village while being transported to police authorities.

Local residents had detained Das earlier that afternoon at his home in Sanbari village following allegations that he had stolen a smartphone from a neighboring community. According to Shukur Ali, a former local union council member, Das has no steady employment and is widely known in the area for his involvement in drug use and repeated thefts, including incidents involving livestock, jewelry, and mobile phones.

After his apprehension on Thursday, villagers initially tied Das to a tree near his residence. By Friday evening, a group of residents placed him on an engine-powered boat to deliver him to the Dharmapasha police station. The escape occurred around 8:00 p.m. as the vessel passed through the Boroiya River, at which point Das managed to jump overboard and swim to safety, evading his captors.

Local reports indicate that Das has since gone into hiding. Mohammad Shahid Ullah, the officer-in-charge of Dharmapasha police station, confirmed he has been notified of the incident and stated that authorities are investigating the matter with high priority.
