Son in ICU, father waiting on floor to admit daughter

Five-year-old elder son Tahsin is admitted to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) with measles. On the other hand, father Billal Hossain is waiting on the abandoned stairs of the hospital with his one-year-old and two-month-old daughter Bibi Ayesha. Baby Ayesha is sleeping on a mat on the stairs. He is also suffering from pneumonia. But as his son was on the brink of death in the ICU, this helpless father could not get his daughter admitted anywhere.

Billal Hossain told Prothom Alo that he brought his son from Lalmohan in Bhola to Dhaka five days ago when he was diagnosed with pneumonia. First, he was treated for three days in a private hospital in the capital. There he developed symptoms of measles. The child’s fever also increases. On the other hand, it becomes impossible for him to bear the expenses of the private hospital.
Forced to visit two more hospitals with Tahsin, Billal came to DNCC Dedicated Covid-19 Hospital. There he was diagnosed with measles. Tahsin’s condition became very critical. Doctors quickly admitted him to the ICU. He is being treated there for two days. On the other hand, mother Sharmin Begum is anxiously waiting by her son’s side.
Billal Hossain said, ‘My two children, both of them have pneumonia. I am keeping the boy in ICU, his condition is very serious. Mayada has no measles. I can’t admit him here. So I stay outside with him.
Billal Hossain said that he had spent all his life’s wealth for the treatment of his son, “I am very worried.” The boy has pneumonia since childhood. I fish in the river. All the money I earn in my life, I blow everything on it. I am bringing a loan of 50 to 60 thousand taka while moving to Dhaka. I am still in debt of more than 4 lakh rupees.
Nana Abdur Rob came to the same hospital from Noakhali Sadar with his eight-month-old granddaughter Jannat Begum on Tuesday morning. He was seen being taken to the ICU this morning with his granddaughter in his arms. Shishu Jannat’s mother Runa Begum was also there.
Abdur Rab told Prothom Alo that Jannat had pneumonia first. He was treated for a few days in a hospital in Noakhali. Meanwhile, he caught measles. But due to lack of money, they could not bring the child to Dhaka quickly. Collection of money is delayed by a few days. By then, the child’s condition took a turn for the worse.
Jannat’s grandfather said, “I am collecting some tia (money). Hare (Later) Kailga Ambulance Ekkan directly came to Dhaka. Upon arrival, doctors administered oxygen. Aizaga (today) came (to bring) to the ICU in the morning. The treatment is going on inside, I don’t know what is going on. The situation is very bad.
Asif Haider, Administrative Officer of DNCC Dedicated Covid-19 Hospital, said that 114 children were admitted to the hospital with symptoms of measles in the last 24 hours. At the same time, a child died with suspected measles symptoms. Apart from this, according to the information available till 10 am today, 51 children are admitted in the ICU of the hospital.
