Asha Bhosle, the brightest star of the Indian music world, is no more. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai on Sunday (April 12). He was 92 years old. India as well as the world mourned his death. 

Maharashtra Culture Minister Ashish Shelar officially announced the news of his death outside the hospital. Dr. Prateet Samdani said that he was admitted to the hospital due to various complications and physical ailments due to old age. He eventually died of multi-organ failure. 

Asha Bhosle’s son Anand Bhosle and granddaughter Janai Bhosle said she was hospitalized due to extreme fatigue and a chest infection. The body will be kept at his residence from 11 am on Monday (April 13) for public to pay their respects. His last rites will be performed at Shivaji Park in Mumbai at 4 pm. 

Asha Bhosle started singing at the age of 10 in the Marathi movie ‘Majha Baal’ in 1943. He has sung thousands of songs in a career spanning eight decades. From soulful dance songs like ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’ or ‘O Hasina Zulfon Wali’ to soulful ghazals like ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’—he was equally adept at everything. Also in 2024, he was seen performing the signature step of Vicky Kaushal’s song ‘Tauba Tauba’ on stage in Dubai. 

He was awarded Padma Bhushan (2008) and Dadasaheb Phalke (2000) by the Government of India for his outstanding contribution to music. He also won two National Film Awards. He was also named in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most studio recordings.

He established himself not only as a singer but also as a successful entrepreneur. Starting in Dubai in 2002, his international restaurant chain Asha’s gained popularity in Kuwait, Bahrain and the UK. 

According to Indian media sources, his net worth at the time of death was around Rs 200-250 crore. Out of this, the musician has immovable properties and luxury residences worth around Rs 80-100 crore in Mumbai and Pune. 

He used to say, ‘Just as man cannot live without breath, music is like breath to me.’ Even if the breath of that melody stops, his timeless songs will live forever in the hearts of billions of people.
