Separate road accidents in Bogura and Sylhet left at least 15 people dead and 34 injured on Friday, marking a deadly morning on Bangladesh’s highways.
In Bogura, seven people were killed when a passenger bus veered out of control and struck a group of laborers waiting for work. According to local police, the Shah Fateh Ali Paribahan bus was traveling from Dhaka to Naogaon when it swerved off the Bogura-Naogaon highway in the Erulia Silkibanda area around 6:30 a.m. The vehicle struck a utility pole before plowing into the workers. Three victims died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Authorities have identified six of the deceased, most of whom were local laborers from the Gaibandha and Joypurhat districts.
Less than an hour later, a head-on collision between two passenger buses in Sylhet’s Osmaninagar upazila claimed another eight lives. The incident occurred on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway near the Kashikapon area around 7:30 a.m., involving a Bengal Paribahan bus heading toward Sylhet and a Unique Paribahan bus bound for Dhaka.
The collision forced the Unique Paribahan vehicle into a roadside ditch, resulting in the immediate death of eight passengers. At least 25 others were injured in the crash and subsequently transported to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Among the survivors was Faruk Mia, a traveler from Kishoreganj who had been returning from a pilgrimage to the Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) shrine. Mia, who sustained injuries in the crash, confirmed that one of his traveling companions, a contractor named Saiful Islam, was among those killed.
Police officials in both districts are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crashes. While the identities of the deceased in the Sylhet accident remain under verification, medical staff at both regional hospitals continue to treat the dozens of injured survivors, several of whom remain in critical condition.
