Security forces heighten alert across Bangladesh ahead of National Mourning Day

Law enforcement agencies across Bangladesh, including the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), have implemented stringent security measures nationwide ahead of August 15, the anniversary of the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Authorities have increased intelligence surveillance and established checkpoints to prevent extremist groups, banned organizations, or subversive elements from disrupting the day’s observances.
RAB has directed each of its battalions to evaluate potential threats and finalize area-specific security strategies. The elite force stated that it has deployed additional personnel to event sites and sensitive locations to prevent infiltration by hostile actors. To enhance intelligence gathering, RAB has recruited local informants and is actively tracking individuals linked to banned organizations.
In addition to physical security, RAB has intensified cyber patrolling to combat rumors and misinformation on social media platforms. The force has warned that immediate action will be taken against those attempting to incite instability through misleading content. Furthermore, specialized bomb disposal units have been placed on standby to address any discovery of suspicious items. RAB Director General Mohammad Ahsan Habib stated that while there are no specific intelligence reports indicating an imminent threat, the force remains at maximum readiness to ensure public safety.
Simultaneously, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has placed the capital under a comprehensive security blanket. Security protocols include rigorous vehicle and pedestrian checks at all entry points to the city. Specialized units, including SWAT, bomb disposal teams, and canine squads, are conducting sweep operations at critical installations and high-traffic areas.
DMP officials confirmed that vital infrastructure and public gathering spots are being monitored via CCTV networks and drone surveillance. Plainclothes officers from the Detective Branch and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit are actively collecting intelligence on the ground. To ensure a rapid response to any emergency, the police have deployed Quick Response Teams across various locations, including metro rail stations, transport terminals, and major shopping centers.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Mohammad Osman Gani emphasized that while no specific threat against August 15 activities has been identified, the security deployment is a preventive measure to maintain public order and thwart any potential subversion. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals, objects, or activities to the nearest law enforcement office immediately.
