Man killed in Sylhet after filing rape case against nephew

A man was hacked to death in Gowainghat, Sylhet, on Saturday afternoon, allegedly by his elder brother and nephews, shortly after his family filed a rape case against one of the nephews. Local police have arrested one person in connection with the homicide.
The victim, identified as Kalimullah, was attacked following a family dispute that had escalated over the past week. Relatives stated that Kalimullah’s daughter had allegedly been raped by a son of his elder brother, Saif Ullah. Although the matter had been subjected to multiple village arbitrations, tensions flared when the family learned that the accused was being prepared for an arranged marriage elsewhere. In response, Kalimullah’s wife filed a formal rape case at the local police station on Saturday morning.
Following the filing of the case, three police officers accompanied Kalimullah to the village to investigate the scene. Witnesses, including the victim’s brother Abdul Aziz and local Union Parishad member Abdul Gafur, alleged that the attack occurred in the presence of the officers. They asserted that the police could have intervened to prevent the killing.
The responding police team, consisting of a sub-inspector and two assistant sub-inspectors, disputed these claims. Sub-inspector Naimul Hassan stated that the allegation that the murder occurred while officers were present is false.
Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruk Morol said the officers had already departed the scene and were approximately ten minutes away when the incident occurred. He added that upon receiving reports of the violence, the police returned to the site, recovered the body, and took one suspect into custody. An investigation into the murder is ongoing.
