Salimullah Khan’s insistence on analysis beyond the state narrative to understand the beginning of the liberation war

Professor Salimullah Khan emphasized on the need for multi-dimensional analysis of the initial phase of the liberation war, going beyond the correct historiography and state narrative. He said that the ‘Operation Searchlight’ of 25 March 1971 was a well-planned crackdown by the Pakistani military junta, which precipitated the Bengali armed resistance and liberation war.

He said these things while addressing a seminar titled ‘Operation Searchlight and the Beginning of Bangladesh’s Liberation War: In Search of Documentary Narrative of History’ at Jagannath University Central Auditorium on Monday.

Salimullah Khan emphasized on the use of political-historical context, eyewitness accounts and contemporary documents to understand the history of the Liberation War. He mentioned that although this massacre is included in international law as genocide, its full documentation is still necessary. He called for new questions and informed research in the search for truth.

In the seminar, Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Raich Uddin said that even after 56 years of independence, the true and accurate history of Bangladesh’s liberation war has not been written yet, which is a big disgrace for the nation. He regretted that it has not been possible to determine the exact number of martyrs or the complete list of martyred intellectuals in the liberation war. He called for freedom from the tendency to distort history to convey the correct history to future generations.

Professor Imranul Haque, Research Director of the University, conducted the program under the chairmanship of Islamic History and Culture Department. Anisur Rahman. Teachers, students and researchers from various departments of the university participated in the seminar.
