Sylhet Student Wing Demands Arrest and Prosecution of Banned Awami League and Chhatra League Members
Members of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Sylhet staged a protest on Saturday, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of leaders and activists associated with the Awami League and its outlawed student wing, the Bangladesh Chhatra League. The demonstration, which began shortly after noon in front of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner’s office, saw participants gather in the Shahjalal Upashahar area to voice their demands for legal action against individuals they accuse of orchestrating social unrest.
Protesters engaged in a series of chants, calling for the dismantling of what they described as the "terrorist bases" of the Awami League and its affiliates. The atmosphere remained tense as participants asserted their resolve to confront those they believe are responsible for undermining national stability. In response to the gathering, authorities deployed additional police forces to the area to maintain order.
During the demonstration, a delegation representing both the district and metropolitan wings of the JCD was invited into the police headquarters to discuss their grievances. The representatives met with Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Haque, who reportedly assured the delegation that their concerns would be addressed promptly.
Rubel Islam, the organizational secretary of the Sylhet Metropolitan Chhatra Dal, alleged that members of the banned Chhatra League continue to engage in subversive activities, yet have avoided effective law enforcement intervention. The JCD maintained that the protest was a necessary step to compel the administration to take decisive action against these individuals.
Following the meeting with the police leadership, the protesters agreed to suspend their demonstration at approximately 2:00 p.m. While the current agitation has been paused, JCD leadership warned that they would resume their protests if the authorities fail to act on the promises made during the consultation. The demonstration was attended by key district and metropolitan leaders, including JCD District Acting President Juber Ahmed, General Secretary Delwar Hossain, Metropolitan President Sudip Jyoti, and General Secretary Fazle Rabbi Ahsan.
