Roads submerged in heavy rains in Feni

Most areas of Feni city have been submerged due to heavy rains. This Tuesday morning at around 9:30, torrential rain started in the city. Two hours of continuous rain submerged the main roads and by-roads. The rain was accompanied by gusty winds. Strong winds have uprooted 10 to 12 trees in the city and suburbs. SSC candidates are in trouble due to the disaster. Candidates had to light candles in many centers due to power outage.
According to the Meteorological Office, 150 mm of rain has been recorded in 24 hours from yesterday afternoon to 3 pm today. This is the highest rainfall of this season. The concerned officials said that this level of rain is considered as heavy rain.
Officer-in-Charge (Senior Observer) of Feni Meteorological Office. Mojibur Rahman said, 150.6 millimeters of rain has been recorded in the district in the last 24 hours till 3 o’clock today. Moderate to heavy rain is likely over the district in the next 72 hours.
The sky was overcast since this morning. Around 9:30 in the morning, the sky was covered with dark clouds. At one stage, heavy storms and torrential rains started. Two hours of continuous heavy rain left the city’s main thoroughfare submerged in water. Important roads in the city including Shaheed Shahidullah Kaiser Road, Mizan Road, Nazir Road, Masterpara, Petrobangla, Pathanbari, Academy, Sadar Hospital Mor, Shanti Company Road were submerged in water. Due to the heavy rains, Oligli got waterlogged and the office going passengers suffered a lot. SSC candidates also suffer.
Due to the strong wind along with the rain, trees fell on the rural roads of Feni Sadar upazila and disrupted traffic. Abul Hossain, a resident of Alokdia village of Kalidah Union of Feni Sadar Upazila, said that traffic movement in the rural area has been disrupted as 10 to 12 trees have fallen around the road due to the severe storm.
SSC exam candidates have faced the most problems due to heavy rains. While going to the examination center and returning home with the examinees from the center, the parents and the examinees were hindered by the rain. Due to the accumulation of water on the road, there is also a problem in getting vehicles. Many returned home after treading water. Apart from Feni city, candidates have also suffered in the coastal upazila of Sonagazi, the border Phulgazi, Parashuram and Chagalnaya upazilas. Water has accumulated on the roads of these upazilas and traffic has been disrupted.
Vidit Jahangir has participated in the SSC examination from Feni Government Pilot High School. He said that he had to suffer on the way to and from the examination. In Prothom Alo, she says, ‘On the way to the examination center, Government Girls’ High School, it rained. We had no preparation. So I had to suffer to go to the center. As the electricity was off due to severe storm, the center was lit by alternative arrangements. In that light we had to give the test.
Parashuram Upazila of Feni has been without electricity for more than 48 hours due to the damage of power transmission lines due to Kalboishakhi storm last Sunday. Due to one more round of rain since this morning, most of the areas of the upazila were submerged. In this situation, SSC candidates have to face a big problem. Even though they reached the exam center on time, they had to take the exam by candlelight. In many centers, the examinees’ concentration was disrupted due to repeated blowing out of candles due to gusty winds.
A student named Shariful Islam said that there is no electricity in the house for two days. It was difficult to prepare for the exam. Since there was no electricity in the examination center, the examination had to be conducted by candlelight.
Apart from electricity crisis and waterlogging, the residents are also suffering from gas crisis in Feni city. The gas connection has been disconnected in the entire district since Monday morning. As a result, many homes did not cook; Many have bought food from the hotel at a higher price.
Saleh Ahmed, Assistant Engineer of Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Feni Office said, gas is off for two days for the repair work of Feni-Chittagong gas transmission line. Gas connection will resume from this evening.
Flooding has intensified in various areas of Feni due to the failure of rain water to drain. Residents complain that most of the city’s canals, drains and sewerage lines are filled with garbage.
Syed Monir, a resident of Masterpara of the city, said that in the torrential rain, the Masterpara road sank and water entered the shops. The area has become so unsanitary because the sewerage lines are not cleaned regularly.
Zakir Hossain, Executive Engineer of Feni Municipality, said that the main main road of the city was submerged in water for some time due to heavy rain, but the water quickly went down from the road due to the efforts of cleaning workers. Suarez – The cleaners are working regularly in 12 teams to keep the system uninterrupted.
