Govt working to improve fire service: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that fire fighters are a symbol of the trust and confidence of the people of the country. The role of fire service in the natural disasters of the country has become important day by day. The government is working to increase the facilities of the fire service members and improve the capacity of the force.
The Home Minister said this while addressing the Chief Guest at the Fire Service and Civil Defense Week-2026 and Passing Out Parade (parade to enter formal career after completion of training of new members) organized at Purbachal Multipurpose Fire Service and Civil Defense Training Ground in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj at 10 am today. This year’s theme was ‘Firefighters have only one stake, keep property and life safe’.

Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defense Directorate Brigadier General Muhammad Zaheed Kamal presided over the opening ceremony. Home Ministry Senior Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj) Member of Parliament Mustafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, Rupganj Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Saiful Islam, Narayanganj District Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehdi Islam were present on the occasion.
The Home Minister said that the overall development of the fire service and coordination with other forces should be strengthened in the reality of the risk of earthquakes. The facilities and facilities of the officers and employees of this institution, who are the first to run to the side of the people in danger in all disasters, will be increased. 538 fire stations across the country are not enough. Therefore, manpower and stations will be increased to modernize the fire service to deal with fire fighting, natural disasters and accidents.

Mentioning that the members of the fire service are the first to stand by the people in disasters and critical situations, Salahuddin Ahmed said, for this, the government is working to ensure their international quality training, manpower increase and modern facilities. The fire service has earned the trust of the nation through professionalism, courage, sacrifice and service activities in any disaster including fire. Meanwhile, 52 people of the fire service have died while fighting the fire.
More than 250 new members joined the fire service in the inaugural ceremony. Among them, the Home Minister gave medals to 9 people who achieved success in basic training. Another 20 members were awarded medals in recognition of bravery and national contribution.
It is to be noted that on the occasion of Fire Service and Civil Defense Week-2026, a three-day awareness program has been undertaken across the country from 20 to 22 May.
