Police bolster security at Jashore lawmakers home following clash over madrasa dispute

Security has been intensified at the residence of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Golam Rasul in Jashore following a violent confrontation between the parliamentarian’s family and a local madrasa. Tensions escalated on Tuesday when a crowd of angry residents attacked the lawmaker’s home, prompting authorities to deploy a police detail to maintain order.
The conflict centers on a long-standing property dispute involving the Al-Madrasatush Shar’iyah, a Qawmi madrasa established in 2023 directly across from the lawmaker’s home in the Nilganj area. Local residents and the MP’s family have repeatedly clashed over the use of a narrow access road shared by the school and the neighborhood. Disputes frequently arose over students playing in the street and parents gathering in the alleyway, leading neighbors to demand the relocation of the institution.
The situation deteriorated on Monday when the lawmaker’s daughter, Anannya, allegedly intimidated students at the school. While police initially mediated the dispute, the conflict flared again on Tuesday morning as Rasul and his daughter engaged in a heated confrontation with teachers and parents at the madrasa. The resulting public outcry led to the vandalism of the MP’s residence.
Despite the unrest, officials at Al-Madrasatush Shar’iyah confirmed that academic operations have resumed. Mufti Kabir Hossain, a representative of the institution, noted that 80 out of 90 students returned to class on Wednesday morning. He further claimed that Rasul visited the madrasa on Tuesday evening to offer an apology for the incident.
Parents, however, remain deeply concerned about the safety of their children. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one parent expressed a desire for a peaceful resolution that guarantees the protection of the students and those who advocated on their behalf during the conflict.
Sub-Inspector Fazlur Rahman of Jashore Kotwali Police Station confirmed that a six-member police unit remains stationed at the lawmaker’s home, with additional patrols monitoring the surrounding area. Jashore Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam stated that both parties have been summoned to the District Administration office on Wednesday afternoon for a formal meeting intended to reach a permanent resolution to the dispute.
