USTC University Student Dies in Fall from Building

A woman identified as Rita Akter died Saturday night after falling from a tall building at the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC) campus in Chittagong city, police said, as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police recovered Akter’s body from the USTC campus around 10 p.m. local time. Investigators have not yet determined whether she jumped or was pushed from the building.

Akter, who was not a student at USTC, hailed from Baniachong Thana in Habiganj and was the daughter of Azizur Rahman. She resided in the Pahartali CDA Market area of Chittagong. Authorities are actively investigating her purpose for being on the university premises.

Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arifur Rahman told Prothom Alo that Akter’s skull had separated from her body and her face was disfigured upon discovery. He reiterated that it remains unclear if she was thrown or jumped from the roof.

OC Rahman noted the absence of CCTV cameras at the immediate scene and described footage from surrounding cameras as unclear. He also stated that there were no other visible signs of injury on her body. Police are attempting to ascertain whether Akter was a patient at the on-campus medical college hospital or merely a visitor.

Following the discovery, officers from Khulshi Police Station arrived at the scene, prepared an inquest report, and subsequently sent the body to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
