Retired soldier appears in court for Comilla college student murder case

Retired army soldier Hafizur Rahman was brought before a Comilla court on Monday in connection with the 2016 murder of Comilla Victoria Government College student Sohagie Jahan Tonu. Rahman, who is currently being held at the Comilla Central Jail, appeared before Senior Judicial Magistrate Md. Muminul Haque at 11 a.m. for a scheduled hearing in the ongoing case.
According to Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) inspector Md. Tarikul Islam, who is leading the investigation, the court appearance was a routine procedural matter. While Rahman was presented before the magistrate, his legal counsel did not file a bail application during the proceedings. Following the brief hearing, the court ordered him returned to custody at the Comilla Central Jail.
Rahman was initially remanded into PBI custody on April 22 for three days of interrogation at the agency’s special unit in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur. He was subsequently transferred to the Comilla Central Jail on April 25 following his initial court appearance. Inspector Islam noted that the investigation remains ongoing, emphasizing that authorities are still awaiting the results of DNA testing conducted on the suspect. Meanwhile, PBI investigators continue to work toward identifying and apprehending other potential suspects in the case.
The murder of Sohagie Jahan Tonu remains a high-profile case that shocked the nation in March 2016. On the evening of March 20, Tonu went to a residence within the Comilla Cantonment area to provide private tutoring but failed to return home. Her body was later discovered in a wooded area near a power plant within the cantonment grounds.
