Rajshahi University Launches Probe into Faculty Alleged to Have Ties with Banned Awami League

Rajshahi University has established a five-member inquiry committee to investigate allegations that several faculty members have been involved in clandestine activities supporting the now-banned Awami League and the administration of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The probe, ordered by the university administration on Wednesday, comes as institutions across the country scrutinize staff affiliations following recent political upheaval.
According to the university’s acting registrar, Professor Iftikharul Alam Masud, the decision follows reports from various media sources and external agencies indicating that as many as 404 teachers across 22 public universities allegedly maintained secret ties with the former government. The committee has been tasked with determining which, if any, faculty members at Rajshahi University were involved in such activities and is expected to submit its findings as soon as possible.
The disciplinary measures for those found guilty could be severe, with the university warning of potential penalties ranging from compulsory retirement and termination of service to outright dismissal.
The investigative panel is led by Professor Md. Rezaul Karim of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is joined by committee members Professor Md. Gulam Sadik from the Department of Pharmacy, Professor Mohammad Amirul Islam from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Professor Md. Anisur Rahman from the Department of Zoology. Professor Md. Gias Uddin Ahmed, of the Department of Agronomy and Agricultural Extension, will serve as the committee’s member secretary.
Registrar Iftikharul Alam Masud confirmed that the committee, which includes a member of the university’s syndicate, is scheduled to hold its inaugural meeting on Thursday to initiate the review process.
