Expatriate killed in clash with vigilante group in Chandpur

A 50-year-old expatriate died in Chandpur’s Sadar upazila on Wednesday evening following a violent confrontation with a group of youths conducting an unsanctioned “anti-drug drive.” The victim, Shahjahan Patwary, a resident of Mandari village, was fatally injured after questioning the group’s activities in his neighborhood.
According to local accounts, the situation escalated when Patwary confronted the youths regarding their motives for patrolling with sticks and clubs. The group reacted by pelting him with bricks and stones. Although he was rushed to a local physician and subsequently transferred to the Chandpur General Hospital, he was declared dead upon arrival.
The incident sparked immediate unrest in the community, with residents blocking the Chandpur-Cumilla regional highway for several hours in protest. The blockade remained in place until late Wednesday night, when authorities from the Chandpur Model Police Station arrived to restore order and dispersed the crowd. Police have since detained one individual suspected of participating in the attack.
Family members of the deceased have leveled serious allegations regarding the orchestration of the violence. Yasin Patwary, the victim’s brother, alleged that the attack was carried out at the direction of former Shahmahmudpur Union Parishad Chairman Swapon Mahmud.
In response to the accusations, the former chairman denied any involvement, characterizing the allegations as a politically motivated conspiracy fueled by the upcoming local elections. He maintained that he was not present in the area when the incident occurred.
The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Chandpur General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Officer-in-Charge of the Chandpur Model Police Station, Foyez Ahmed, confirmed that the situation is currently under control and stated that a formal investigation is underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
