Prime Minister Tareque Rahman launches initiative to distribute 20,000 raincoats to tea garden workers in Sylhet division

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced on Tuesday that the government is committed to providing comprehensive support to private sector initiatives aimed at social welfare, emphasizing that significant national challenges can be addressed through collective efforts.
Speaking at his office in the Secretariat, the Prime Minister inaugurated the distribution of 20,000 raincoats intended to protect tea garden workers in the Sylhet division from adverse weather conditions. The initiative, funded through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, seeks to improve the safety and working environment for laborers across the region.
The distribution program is being implemented under a special initiative by the Ministry of Social Welfare. According to Assistant Press Secretary Abdullah Al Mahmud Shahriyar (Pamir), the raincoats are being provided to tea workers in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj districts. The supply consists of 10,000 units from the Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI), 5,000 from Chevron Bangladesh, and 5,000 from Pandughar Group.
During the ceremony, the Prime Minister personally handed raincoats to 10 workers from Srimangal and Kamalganj. Representing the tea garden community, Santuki Ray from the Majdihi Tea Estate presented the Prime Minister with a gift of tea leaves. Other workers in attendance, including Shanti Uria, Munni Kurmi, Jyotsna Akter, Rina Tanti, Shashika Banerjee, Kabita Karmakar, Sujata Biswas, Rita Rani Bauri, and Afkhatun Nahar, expressed their gratitude for the support.
Private sector representatives at the event reaffirmed their commitment to the welfare of marginalized groups, noting that supporting laborers is a vital component of corporate responsibility. They pledged to continue working in coordination with the government to improve the living standards and working conditions of the country’s workforce.
The event was attended by several high-ranking government officials, including Minister of Social Welfare and Minister of Women and Children Affairs A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain; Minister of Commerce, Industries, and Textiles and Jute Khandaker Abdul Muktadir; Minister of Labour and Employment Ariful Haque Choudhury; and State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin. Several members of parliament were also present, including Emran Ahmad Choudhury, Nasir Uddin Mithu, Md. Shawkatul Islam, M. Nasser Rahman, Mujibur Rahman Choudhury, G.K. Gaws, and S.M. Faisal.
Representatives from the contributing organizations included BAPI Senior Vice President Mosaddeq Hossain, advisor Tapan Chowdhury, executive member and Transcom Group CEO Simin Rahman, and BAPI Executive Director Md. Saiful Islam. Chevron Bangladesh was represented by Directors Md. Imrul Kabir, Ashiq Shehzad Rahman, and Head of Community Engagement A.K.M. Arif Akther, while Pandughar Group’s Chief of People and Corporate Affairs Golam Habib also attended.
