Police Warn of Rising Social Media Impersonation Scams Targeting Government Officials

Bangladesh Police have issued a formal warning regarding a surge in online fraud cases involving criminals impersonating high-ranking government officials and law enforcement personnel on social media. According to a statement released by Police Headquarters on Tuesday, these syndicates are utilizing the names and photographs of senior officials to solicit money and solicit favors, actions that both defraud the public and damage the reputation of state institutions.
Authorities emphasized that the presence of an official’s photograph or identity on a social media profile does not guarantee the account belongs to that individual. Officials cautioned the public against accepting such profiles as authentic or engaging with messages requesting financial assistance or intervention.

To combat this trend, the police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid responding to suspicious requests. Individuals who receive such fraudulent messages are advised to report the activity immediately by calling the national emergency service number, 999. Reports can also be directed to the Cyber Police Center, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), or the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The police leadership maintained that they remain on high alert to identify and apprehend these criminal networks. Authorities reaffirmed that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in these deceptive practices.
