NCP Protests Against Attack on Party Leaders in Sylhet Demands Legal Action

Demonstrators gathered in Sylhet on Wednesday to protest an attack on National Citizens Party (NCP) leaders during a recent protest march in Habiganj. Protesters marched to the city’s Central Shaheed Minar, where they demanded that authorities identify and prosecute the perpetrators within 24 hours.

The event, presided over by Sylhet district NCP convener Juned Ahmed, saw party leaders level serious allegations against members of the Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal. Ahmed stated that the government bears the primary responsibility for ensuring justice and insisted that the party remains committed to avoiding further political instability.

During the proceedings, district NCP member secretary Kamrul Arif claimed that the assault was a direct response to the party’s outspoken political stance. He further criticized local law enforcement, alleging that officers remained inactive while assailants vandalized a vehicle and assaulted its driver in their presence. Arif characterized the incident as part of a broader attempt by a “third party” to provoke unrest and destabilize the regional political climate.

Concluding the rally, participants issued a formal request for the administration to provide comprehensive security measures for the party’s upcoming scheduled marches in Sylhet, set to take place on July 30 and 31. The assembly ended with chants calling for accountability and the restoration of a peaceful political environment.
