Police rescue kidnapped toddler from Chittagong Medical College Hospital, arrest couple

Police in Chittagong arrested a couple on Saturday in connection with the abduction of a 15-month-old child from the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). The suspects, identified as 25-year-old Nashima Begum and her 30-year-old husband Borhan Uddin, were taken into custody following a 15-hour search operation that led authorities to the city’s Chandgaon area.
The incident began on Friday afternoon while the child, Nazehad, was sitting with her grandmother on the fifth floor of the hospital. The family had arrived at the facility from Fasiakhali in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, to accompany a newborn baby who had been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for treatment. While the child’s mother attended to the infant, the grandmother remained in the hallway with Nazehad.

According to hospital police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector Nurul Alam Asheq, Nashima Begum approached the grandmother on Friday around 3 p.m., posing as a friend of the child’s mother to gain her confidence. When the toddler began to cry, the suspect offered to take the child to purchase snacks downstairs. After the pair failed to return, the family initiated a frantic search of the premises before filing a formal kidnapping complaint with the police.
Utilizing information technology to track the suspects’ movements, law enforcement officials successfully located the child approximately one kilometer away from the hospital in the Chandgaon area. The toddler was rescued unharmed, and the couple was apprehended on the spot. Police are currently conducting further investigations into the motive behind the abduction as the suspects remain in custody.
