Tarique Rahman Emphasizes Merit-Based Promotions for Modernizing Bangladesh Army

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for a rigorous, merit-based approach to military promotions, insisting that political considerations and personal biases be set aside to ensure the development of a professional and modern army. Speaking at the inauguration of the Army Selection Board-2026 at Army Headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday, the Prime Minister emphasized that integrity, professional competence, leadership qualities, and discipline must remain the paramount criteria for advancement within the ranks.

The Prime Minister’s remarks, as relayed by Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Roni, underscored the necessity of building a force defined by institutional strength rather than individual preference. During the event, the Prime Minister honored the legacy of the nation’s founding figures, paying deep tribute to the late President Ziaur Rahman for his foundational contributions to the modernization and restructuring of the Bangladesh Army.

Reflecting on the history of the nation’s armed forces, the Prime Minister expressed profound gratitude to the martyrs and veterans of the Liberation War. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by military personnel during peacekeeping operations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The Prime Minister lauded the army’s role in safeguarding national sovereignty, noting its critical functions beyond traditional defense. He praised the institution for its dual commitment to maintaining internal security, managing disaster responses, and providing essential support to the civilian administration, extending his thanks to the Chief of Army Staff and all ranks for their service.

Upon his arrival at the Army Headquarters, the Prime Minister was received by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman and Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Mainur Rahman. The Army Chief expressed appreciation for the Prime Minister’s presence at the inauguration of the selection board.

The event was attended by senior military officials, including the Prime Minister’s Defense Advisor, Brigadier General (retd) A K M Shamshul Islam. Following the formal proceedings, the Prime Minister participated in a photo session with senior officers and recorded his observations in the army’s visitors’ book.
