Police officer injured in mob attack fueled by mosque loudspeaker announcement in Pabna

Two police officers were injured Thursday morning in Sujanagar, Pabna, after a confrontation allegedly incited by announcements made over a local mosque’s loudspeaker. The incident occurred in the Mathurapur area when Sujanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozaffar Hossain and Constable Sabuj Hossain were targeted during an operation.

According to local police, the incident began when two patrol teams arrived in Mathurapur following intelligence reports suggesting that members of the now-prohibited Awami League were conspiring to incite unrest while citizens were gathered to watch football World Cup matches. Police stated that during the initial phase of the operation, several individuals were detained.

Authorities allege that following the detentions, announcements were broadcast over the mosque’s loudspeaker, urging residents to intervene. This led to a violent surge against the police force, during which two patrol vehicles were vandalized. Law enforcement officials claim the attackers successfully seized the detainees from police custody, and the incident resulted in injuries to both the OC and the constable, who have since received primary medical treatment at a private facility. Police have further alleged that the local Awami League president, Abdul Wahab, was present during the altercation.

Abdul Wahab has categorically denied the allegations, stating he was not in the area during the incident. He maintained that he has remained outside the district due to fears of arrest. According to his account, local youths had organized a communal meal following a football match when police arrived and detained a group of people. He claimed that local residents, including women, intervened independently to secure the release of the detainees.

Pabna Superintendent of Police Chufi Ullah confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, with separate cases being filed under the Penal Code and the Anti-Terrorism Act. He stated that efforts are currently focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible for the assault on the officers.
