Bollywood actress and dancer Nora Fatehi appeared before India’s National Commission for Women (NCW) in Delhi on Thursday, May 7, offering a written apology and expressing regret for the “indecent” portrayal of women in the Hindi version of the controversial song ‘Sarkey Chunariya’ from the film ‘KD – The Devil’. The song, released on YouTube on March 15, faced widespread public backlash, leading to its eventual removal.

Fatehi’s appearance at the commission’s Delhi office followed accusations that the Hindi lyrics of ‘Sarkey Chunariya’ presented women in an objectionable and vulgar manner. She stated that her intention was never to offend anyone’s feelings, telling media outlets, “I was a victim of a particular situation. As an artist, I have a responsibility, so I have apologized in writing.”

The actress had previously claimed she only filmed for the song’s Kannada version, asserting that the Hindi adaptation was done without her consent and that she was unaware of its lyrics. As a step towards rectification, Fatehi announced her decision to sponsor the education of orphaned girls, citing a sense of social responsibility.

This incident mirrors a similar summons last month, when actor Sanjay Dutt also appeared before the NCW regarding the same song. Dutt expressed remorse for the unintentional error, apologized in writing, and committed to sponsoring the education of 50 tribal girls.

The hearings, chaired by NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, scrutinized the song’s perceived obscenity and accountability. In the wake of the controversy, the Hindi version of ‘Sarkey Chunariya’ has been removed from YouTube. The film’s director, singer, and lyricist have also issued apologies. Prominent actors like Ravi Kishan and Kangana Ranawat had earlier voiced strong criticism against the song.
