Police Charge 23 Over Banned Awami League Propaganda in Panchagarh

Police in Panchagarh have arrested a local youth leader and filed a terrorism case against more than 100 individuals for allegedly posting materials associated with the Awami League, which has been barred from political activity. Authorities confirmed that the arrests and charges stem from an ongoing investigation into efforts to incite instability and undermine state sovereignty.
The case was initiated last Friday by Sub-Inspector Chandon Kumar Roy of the Panchagarh Sadar Police Station. According to the police report, the charges invoke the Anti-Terrorism Act, naming 23 specific individuals and approximately 80 unidentified suspects. Investigators allege the group acted under the direction of senior leaders of the prohibited party to distribute propaganda and hold clandestine meetings intended to disrupt public order.
The arrested individual is 28-year-old Anarul Islam, also known as Bipul, who serves as the general secretary of the Amarkhana Union Jubo League. Following his apprehension, he was presented before a local court on Wednesday afternoon, which ordered his remand to prison custody.
The case documents identify several key local figures, including the general secretary of the Panchagarh district Swechchhasebak League, Mokhlesar Rahman; the general secretary of the district Chhatra League, Sadman Sakik Patwary; and various municipal leaders from the Krishak League and Jubo League.
The investigation began on the afternoon of June 23, when police responded to intelligence reports that campaign posters featuring images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, and the Awami League’s boat election symbol had been plastered across government infrastructure. Officers recovered the posters from a disused weight control office and a traffic signal structure near the Helipad Bazar area in the Sadar sub-district.
Officer-in-Charge of the Panchagarh Sadar Police Station, Ashraful Islam, stated that efforts to track down the remaining suspects remain active. Police continue to conduct raids to apprehend the other individuals named in the filing as the legal proceedings move forward.
