Mother and child killed after train hits family returning from Eid shopping

A mother and her two-year-old son were killed Wednesday night after being struck by the Cox’s Bazar Express train at Narsingdi railway station. The victims, 27-year-old Sathi Begum and her son, Hasen Mia, were fatally injured while attempting to cross the tracks after a day of shopping for the upcoming Eid holiday.
The family, residents of Kararchar village in the Shibpur sub-district, had traveled to Narsingdi city earlier in the day. According to family accounts and railway police, the tragedy occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. as the family attempted to navigate the station to reach a transport connection home. They were traversing the tracks near the station’s second rail line while the Dhaka-bound Mahanagar Express was stationary at the first platform.
Witnesses noted that the family had attempted to pass through one of the carriages of the stationary Mahanagar Express to reach the other side of the tracks. As Sathi Begum stepped off the train with her son in her arms, followed by her husband, Sujan Mia, and their five-year-old daughter, the incoming Cox’s Bazar Express passed through the station at high speed. The impact threw the mother and child onto the tracks, causing fatal injuries.
Sujan Mia, who works as a laborer and auto-rickshaw driver, rushed his wife and son to the Narsingdi District Hospital. Doctors at the emergency department pronounced both victims dead upon arrival.
Sub-Inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar of the Narsingdi Railway Police confirmed the details of the accident, noting that the victims were struck while attempting to cross the line occupied by the passing express train. Because the family had no complaints regarding the incident, authorities released the bodies to the relatives without conducting post-mortem examinations.
