More than 100 garment workers fell ill on Thursday morning after drinking water at the Dressman Limited factory in the Chandra area of Kaliakoir, Gazipur. The workers, who sought treatment at the Kaliakoir Upazila Health Complex and various private hospitals, reported symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, weakness, and respiratory distress shortly after consuming the factory-supplied water.

Several employees alleged that the water they consumed had a foul odor. As the number of affected workers rose rapidly, panic spread throughout the facility, prompting management to transport the victims to medical centers for urgent care.

Atiqul Islam, the assistant general manager of administration at Dressman Limited, confirmed that dozens of workers were affected. He suggested the illness might be linked to recent heavy rainfall that caused severe waterlogging in the surrounding area earlier in the week. According to factory management, workers may have consumed water from submerged taps outside the facility, while maintaining that the factory’s internal water supply was uncontaminated.

Local police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported to oversee the situation and assist with logistics. Kaliakoir Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam stated that medical professionals have confirmed that the hospitalized workers are currently out of danger.
